Description
Unca Sam was a Ute Indian chief of the Northern Ute Tribe in Utah. He lived in the area of the Great Basin known as Whiterocks. At the time of his death in October 1938, he was the oldest known Ute, well over 100 years old. The portrait was commissioned by Dr. Robert Murray, who met the aged chief when Dr. Murray was just a small boy. The mountain in the background is called Whiterocks.
